"See the Zoo in a whole new light," they say.

There are so many great things to do in DC around the holidays, and our must-see list gets longer and longer every year.  We kept meaning to make it to the ZooLights exhibit but we didn't get there until our last possible chance, our 1st day back from Louisiana.  We brought along our neighbors' son Benjamin to share in the fun.

To paraphrase, ZooLights at the National Zoo is a winter holiday event presenting a display of thousands of sparkling lights featuring sculptures of many of the Zoo’s most popular animals.  The Zoo shines with thousands of lights and animated exhibits.  There are lions, giant pandas, Asian elephants, an octopus and so much more.  Many of the animal houses are open at night so visitors can warm up inside places like the Small Mammal House, Great Ape House and Reptile Discover Center.

I've been working on my photography skills, but taking pictures in the dark without a tripod is hard!  These are a few of my favorites, especially the effect of the waterfall with Christmas lights as night.

Surprisingly the boys were not terribly interested in the lights, but we didn't have the time to spend going through the animal exhibits.  We had already had a full day and needed to get Benjamin home in time for a dinner party so we raced through fairly quickly in under an hour.

I for one am already on board for a visit next year.  Maybe we'll even have a chance to try out the “iceless” skating rink or ride around Great Cats Circle on the new "trackless" train!
