The return of one of our favorite things about holiday time in the city - the model train display at the US Botanical Gardens! This year we introduced Zara and her mom Jocelyn to this fantastic exhibit.
This year's theme is "Who Lives Here?" The trains chug around various dwellings made out of plants and other natural materials. Some are whimsical like the Fairy Flat and houses that look like animals, others are more literal like a collection of Presidential homes.
Joe Joe was seriously excited to share this experience with Zara. They were just adorable together! Zara really hadn't been introduced to the world of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends.
Exiting the railway display brings you out into the actual gardens themselves, and the kids just ran around and had a ball.
We finished up in the Garden Court, where there is a giant indoor tree (with James circling around!) and recreations of the National Mall buildings and monuments out of the same natural materials.
The kids also got a chance to help make "living ornaments," clear plastic balls that become terrariums with the addition of soil and plants. Very cool, very crafty!
Before heading home we walked over to the Capitol building to take some pics with the Christmas tree in the background. The kids clearly had lost interest by now and were total goofballs.
We were trying to find the best angle to photograph and I caught Jocelyn off guard with this one!
Makes more sense with an actual kid in your arms ;)
Super fun day!! Hope to go back next week with Jack & Will.
