Snow Angels

We had our 1st real snow of the season today! We were lucky enough to have a playdate scheduled anyway, so Joe and Jack could experience it together. They have the same coats and very similar hats, and it's hard to tell them apart all bundled up!

They were very tentative at 1st, and needed a minute to take it all in, but then they got into it!

It took 20 minutes to get them dressed and ready, and they had enough after about 10 minutes outside. They both took their gloves off and their hands were probably freezing. No luck in trying to get just one cute picture of them together!

Here's their 1st impression:

In the 30's

Today JT had his official 18 month checkup with Dr. Moe, and his numbers are:
weight 34 pounds, 6 ounces,
height 36 inches.
It's no news to anyone that he's off the charts, but he keeps growing pretty proportionally.

The other thing in the 30's around here is the weather. But do you believe not one single store sells winter clothes anymore???? The boy has no gloves that will fit his paws anymore, so I had to put a pair of mine on him just to walk to the store. Even though I think it's pretty sad, he got a kick out of it. Then he took them off in record time.

If anyone's interested, I finally got a link to Jack's blog over there with the rest of our favorites. Check out Joseph's best friend!

Card Shark

I know it's a new year and a new era now, but to take a step back in time for a second, I want to send a HUGE thank you out to everyone that was sweet enough to tell us how much they loved our holiday card this year. It was truly a labor of love, and far more challenging and complicated than it needed to be. Yes, mostly because of me, since I'm a perfectionist and just want things to be special. Brent would have killed me if I even uttered the word "card" one more time, and our photographer was far too graceful to tell me I was the biggest pain the butt she ever had to deal with after all the changes I requested. I lost count, but I think the card we sent out in the end was actually the 3rd one we designed.

Here are the 3 pics that made the cut - Joseph smiling, starting to giggle, and full on belly-laughing. (Wish I could post the actual card, but I couldn't even begin to imagine how to upload it.)

Here are 2 that we loved that didn't make the cut. Adorable, but just didn't fit in the card the way I wanted it folded. Which is another reason for this post - just wanted everyone to see them!

And props to our photographer, Erica Land, who took these gorgeous portraits and worked tirelessly until the card was exactly the way I wanted it to be. I've recommended her before, and I'm sticking to my word. If you're a local, check her out at www.ericalandphotography.com. I hear Joseph will grace her galleries when she eventually revamps her website.

Change has come!!!

Our hometown of Washington, DC, had to be the most exciting place in the world today as we witnessed the inauguration of our new President, Barak Obama! None of us were crazy enough to even think of braving the crowds and the cold to see it all in person, so we celebrated by having an intimate brunch with our guest, Auntie Nadeen, who is visiting from sunny Florida. We had yummy Belgian waffles and toasted with champagne.

Of course I had to break the TV ban so Joseph could see history in the making!!! We tell him this anyway, but today is a reminder that his possibilities are limitless!

One more cute pic, of Brent and Nadeen when they had gone to the free (outdoor!) concert on the Mall on Sunday, all bundled up.

Joseph at 18 months

There's no way I was even going to bother with the little "18 months old" sign. But the gator still made it in!

It's exciting (and just a little sad at the same time) that we really have a little boy now and not a little baby anymore. Joseph keeps growing and changing right before our very eyes, just like he's supposed to. He's starting to run and is getting good at climbing more and more, walking sideways and backwards and spinning in circles too. We've started a weekly Gymboree class to keep him busy and wear him out, and we'll start swimming lessons in about 2 weeks.

Our biggest change has been in speech and language development. He was (well, IS) such a typical boy and is slow on the talking, but there's been a verbal explosion going on over the past 2 weeks or so. He's got about 10 or 15 words, including his favorite "NO," and some fun new ones like meow, ball, eat, and even ribbit. He's also really catching on with this sign language thing, which is more fun that anything else. He signs "more," "eat," "milk," "water," "all done," and "sleep." But of course now he says the word while he's signing it too! Papa has been a quick study on the signing as well ;)

The other big change was from 2 naps to 1 most days. The big constants in our lives are the 6am wake up call and the hearty appetite that Joe Joe has. He'll still eat anything in sight (he had Beef Bourguignon for dinner last night, with the mushrooms and all). And I still won't give him a cookie.

Although I try to ban TV, I let Joseph watch videos of himself on our laptop and his friends on their blogs, which he gets so excited about. He also loves to knock down and dump out anything in site. Naturally he's still into music, water play, and books.

The big challenges: he says "no" to everything, it's a wrestling match every time we have to change a diaper or put on his pants, he thinks hitting you in the face is hysterical, and he nearly kills himself every 2 seconds tripping, falling, and trying to do stuff he can't quite master yet. And he charges like a bull to grab the camera out of your hands, so I think I've actually deleted more pictures than I've taken in the past 3 months! I pray these are the worst things we have to encounter, because as such, life is GOOD!

Joe the Plumber

You kinda had to see this one coming, right?

We've been lucky so far - he only does this with a clean diaper on.

364 more of these, please

Today was just one of those perfect days that you wish for every day. Joseph took a power nap on the drive over to Jack's house this morning, and woke up just as we arrived, ready to roll. The boys had a great time, and we didn't have to rush back for nap time so early. We got to check out the new rocking horse Jack got for Christmas,

and play with some old standbys too, like the "ball popper" that they both have.

Check out some of the fun!!

Aunt Missy is always good for some laughs!

Then Joseph actually still took a 2 hour nap once we got home, so I could cook and edit photos and blog. And then Brent came home early so I even got to go to the gym.

I could get used to days like these. May there be many more to come!
Hope you had a wonderful day too, and tomorrow's even better.

Easy like Sunday morning

Nothing like coffee and the paper to ease into a Sunday morning. Brent is not thrilled with this picture, but it shows just how much Joseph loves his Papa and wants to be just like him (and always with him), sitting in a chair with his own version of coffee and the Washington Post.

Later on we gave Papa quiet time (to read the New York Times), as Joe and I went over to our local Gymboree for some Sunday morning exercise. He loves when they blow bubbles for him, and this one was stuck in the middle of his forehead for quite a long time!

Sign of the times

It seems to be pretty trendy to teach your kid sign language these days to help them communicate with you before they're truly verbal. In fact, when I ask a patient's parent at work "How many words does he/she have?," they invariably answer something like "2 or 3, but also a few signs too."

Joseph really couldn't care less about signing. It took about 6 months just to learn this one.

And to be honest with you, we always knew he wanted more anyway. He always wants more! But it's a cute parlor trick, isn't it?

Having a ball!

Yesterday I was feeling sick as a dog. I came down with "Strep throat," which I haven't had in ages, but the risk of catching it comes daily with the job I have. Joseph didn't seem too concerned that I was miserable, so I had to come up with ways to entertain him. Believe it or not, I actually broke down and let him watch 15 minutes of TV. The Wiggles. He went into a trance, and I knew I had to come up with something else, fast. Here we go:

Worked like a charm!

Late, for a very important date.

It's gotta be tough having a birthday around a major holiday. Just ask Joseph's Godmother Missy, whose birthday is a few days after Christmas. What with traveling, shopping, and such, we always seem to get around to celebrating in January. But maybe that's not so bad - doesn't everyone wish their birthday celebration would last longer than 1 day?!

And talk about tight schedules: our boys didn't even exchange Christmas gifts until January 3rd! Jack got a basketball hoop from Joseph.

And Joseph got a HUNDRED balls from Jack! He loves them so much already, and they were the 1st thing he went for when he woke up this morning.

Happy Birthday, Mis! As you know from your gift from me, the celebration WILL continue even longer! Love you!!! You're the PERFECT Godmother and friend!
