Halloween '09

I spent all day at work yesterday dressed like this:

Only about 1/2 the people knew who I was supposed to be. Most people thought I was a mouse or a cat. Any other ideas?
Maybe this helps:

You either know it or you don't. Max! Where The Wild Things Are. Great children's book. Just came out as a movie 2 weeks ago.

Joseph's costume was a little more obvious.

It was a tough choice between pirate and fire fighter, but this costume was too great to pass on.

Action shots with the hose:

Off to save his 1st damsel in distress! (actually Papa)

Driving the big engine:

After a hard day on the job:

Since Joe Joe can be a wild thing too, here he is crowning me as king of the Wild Things, just like in the book.

Hope you have a Happy Halloween! Maybe some pics from trick-or-treating tomorrow, depending on how that goes.

Trial Run

In preparation for Halloween:

Guess I make him "say cheese" too much!!

In case you're wondering what he's carrying around, they're trick-or-treat bags I made for Joseph and Jack. They're both going to be fire fighters, and are wearing the same costume too. I felt bad that I didn't make Joseph's costume this year, so I had to make something. They're reversible!

Fried

Last weekend we had a quick visit from Grammy and Grandpa. Grammy brought the best book ever, rhymes about Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends. Grandpa was a good sport letting Joseph tickle away.

We went out on Sunday for Grammy's birthday, and Joseph ate his very 1st french fry. Yes, 2 years and 3 months before he had one fry. That I know of.

He loved the fries, but then spent the night puking. Probably unrelated, since he had a fever and a cold, but maybe it was a sign? All I know is I was fried by morning and am not eager to see french fries any time soon.

This Little Piggy

My office is one of the very few local places lucky enough to have received a shipment of the coveted injectable swine flu vaccine. So off to the office on my day off and another boo boo for Joe Joe.

I thought ahead and put a snack container in his jacket. As soon as he got his shot, I asked him what was in his pocket. As per usual, he answered "a cracker," but this time there really was! Crackers make him happy, and there were no more tears.

Paper or Plastic?

We accompanied Missy and the boys to the park yesterday to get them out of the house for a bit and give some moral support. Will needed to be fed, and Mis had to put him down for a second to get things situated. I was keeping an eye on Jack and JT, and could only laugh when I turned around and saw Will perched on his diaper bag! Where's Anne Geddes when you need her?

Meanwhile, what were these 2 up to over in the sandbox?

Will.I.Am

Yesterday Joseph and I finally got to meet Jack's baby brother!
Presenting William Reed Estabrook:

My sweet, sweet Joe Joe Bear was so gentle with him. He would make a wonderful big brother!

The Baking Bug

Benjamin's mom was planning on a bug themed party for his 1st birthday. She bought these edible bee and ladybug cake decorations, and asked me for some thoughts on what to do with them. Unable to resist a friend in need of baking help, especially when a theme is involved, I offered to take care of the whole thing. She wanted cupcakes, but there was a little batter left over, so I couldn't resist making a "smash cake" and decorating it to match the party invitation.

Some bugs had to be playing in the dirt:

Some had to be flying in the sky:

And some were in the grass:

They looked really cute all together on the buffet:

The birthday boy, Benjamin:

Benjamin and Joseph share our nanny, Esther. Joseph was so excited to see her!

Benjamin definitely liked his cake.

And Joe Joe didn't seem to mind trying a cupcake. He had seen those cupcakes all over his house all day long, and finally got to dive in.

"There's a front comin' in!"

I have heard this phrase a million and one times, since Brent and his brother Glenn are Weather Channel junkies.

We knew there was rain in the forecast for Saturday afternoon, but we were still able to spend the morning on the beach. Brent and Joseph were enjoying watching the waves crash.

Then the sky darkened, and you could literally see the front comin' in.

I don't know if I like these pictures or the sunset pictures better. They're all so amazing!

At least I can understand why no one else was on the beach now. But we didn't even get rained on.

Sunrise, Sunset

One night in Duck we ate at The Blue Point Grill, and were seated at a table that faced the sound. We couldn't have lucked out any better, as we got to watch the sun slowly set as we finished our wonderful dinner.

Appropriate that there were lots of ducks swimming by. Probably has nothing to do with the name of the town.

Then the next morning Joe was up with the chickens again. SInce our balcony faced the ocean, we got to see the sun rise. That day and every day thereafter.

Just Ducky

For the 2nd year in a row we went to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and stayed in a great little town called Duck. Going to the beach is always Brent's ideas, but Joseph just loves the beach as much as his Papa does.

Traveling after Labor Day is the best thing to do before your kids are school aged. Weather's still great, rates are better, and there are no crowds at all. Seriously, none. Yet the hotel was booked. Where were all these people if we were literally the only people on the beach the majority of the time?

I'm not the biggest fan of the beach, but I know my boys love it, so I just try to keep busy by playing with Joseph. He loves the waves, but gets a little scared when they crash at his feet - check out the way he's hooked himself onto my legs!

There was also no one in the pool most of the time. Here are Brent and Joseph enjoying the pool all to themselves.

We stayed in an identical suite as last year, and Joseph continued his pattern of constantly trying to escape. He's only grown about 6 inches over the past year, but it looks like more than a foot when you compare the pictures. He wasn't even walking yet last time.

Plenty more pics to come in stages, as always.
By the way, thanks, Heidi for giving me the idea to write the title in the sand. So creative!
