Beach Baby

We thought it would be a great idea to take a little road trip while Olga was here, so we set off for the beach in Rehoboth, Delaware. Just 3 hours away, but it looks like we packed for a cross-country trek! Thankfully no one warned us that it's impossible to pack lightly with an infant, or we might have had 2nd thoughts. Ignorance is bliss!

Now THAT'S how to relax on vacation!

Family fun on the beach, day.....

......and night.

(Pictures like this are why we drag a tripod with us every where we go, even when trying to pack lightly.)

Showers I and II

Boy, are we one lucky family! We've already had 2 baby showers, and there's actually a 3rd on the way. People have been so overwhelmingly sweet and generous when it comes to showering Joseph with love....and loot!

Our 1st shower was thrown by Brent's office. Not only did the department of Pediatrics throw a fantastic party, but we had visitors and presents from every other department too - Radiology, Pharmacy, OBGYN, Internal Medicine, Administration, and everyone in between. It's a great joy to see how much Brent is loved and respected at Kaiser.

Our 2nd shower by thrown by "The Girls," Andra, Angie, Elisabeth, Jessica, Mallory, Meredith, Missy, and Sabrina. More people wanted to host, but there was just no more room on the invitation!

This shower was thrown together with lightening speed so that it could happen when the family was in town. Grammy, Grandpa, and Mimi all got to see (again) what an amazing group of friends we have in DC (and we're still counting Angie and Jessica, even though they defected back to Louisiana).

This shower was truly stellar!!! The invitations, decorations, food, gifts, and most importantly, company, were all top notch. Who would ever have imagined cupcakes with his initials on them?! And cookies iced to match his shower invitation, with his monogram on them?!

We only wish everyone else could have been there in person to see how gorgeous everything was. We are so grateful to our friends for everything they've done for us and our son.

Splish Splash

Joe has definitely gotten over his fear of bathtime (as have we!), and absolutely LOVES the tub. We've never seen him as peaceful as when he's kicking around in the water.

We did finally buy a baby tub, so Daddy no longer needs to put on a bathing suit and jump in there with him. Those amazingly tan arms belong to Mimi, who is sure to give swimming lessons to him when he's older.

Meeting Mimi

JT finally got to meet someone from Brent's side of the family - his Mimi (what the grandkids are going to call his mom Olga). She flew up from Loiusiana and has spent the past week here, loving him and giving us a little break from time to time.

Mirror, mirror

mirror, mirror, on this toy
who's the cutest baby boy?
that's an easy one to know,
it's obviously little joe!

Zzzzzzzzzzz

How many more cute poses are there to catch him in when he's sleeping? I don't know, but he keeps coming up with them! More importantly, Joseph actually DOES sleep a little more than he used to, which makes us all happy campers.

Anticipation.....

Seems I've gotten many of you hooked on checking our blog for new posts (and truth be told, once I figured out how easy it was to do, I was totally hooked myself!). But the past week has been super busy: we had not 1 but 2 baby showers, my parents came down for the weekend, and Brent's mom flew in from Louisiana for the week. Right now, we're at the beach with her in Delaware. My, my, my, we have a lot to learn about travelling with a baby, but the weather is gorgeous and we're still having fun anyway. So when we get back, I'll have photos from all of these events to share with everyone, and I'm hoping the wait will be worth it.
Love to everyone,
Carl

In the hood

Look at our little homeboy! Maybe he wasn't particularly thrilled wearing a hoodie, but he looked so sweet, and it was actually a little cold for him yesterday. (plus at this rate, he won't fit into this outfit much longer)

Is he trying to tell us something by sign language? Maybe baseball is in his future.

Mean, but clean

Q: How many pediatricians does it take to bathe a newborn?
A: Three. But we only had 2 available, so we did the best we could!

A sponge bath in the sink was not one of Joseph's favorite activities, so we only tortured him twice. But now that we can put him in the tub, he LOVES it.

A strategically placed foot is a boy's best friend. But we have other pictures that will come back to haunt him as a teenager.

Supercute!

How on earth could I have forgotten this one when I posted a few of our favorite photos a few days ago? Oh well, I guess it keeps you coming back looking for more. He's just so adorable, and when I see him like this, I'm still a little overwhelmed that this perfect little baby is really our son. But then he cries for an hour for no reason at all and smacks me back to reality!

Our other baby boys

In case you're wondering about the name of our blog, we'll give you a hint: there's not a girl in the joint! Even our 2 cats are boys: Jeffrey, the traditional looking Siamese (who just turned 10 on 8/15), and Simon, the long-haired Siamese unconscious on the newspaper.

Neither of them seem to be phased at all by the new baby in the house.

Proud Grandparents

Carl's parents were the first family to see Joseph in person. Grammy G. ONLY gave him about 1000 kisses, but it was JUST a weekend trip, and we're sure she'll make up for lost time. There hasn't been a little baby on our side of the family for 9 years, since our niece Samantha was born!

Three generations of family. Joseph owes his name in part to Grandpa G. - both he and big Glenn (Brent's Dad) share the same middle name of Joseph, so it was an easy choice for us to make when trying to pick a name for our son.

Had any of you ever heard of a Bugaboo stroller before you had kids? We hadn't, but it turns out they are the Cadillac of strollers, owned by rock stars, Hollywood's A-listers, and now JT (in other words, kids with incredibly generous grandparents). Thanks Mary and Al! All the other babies on the block have Bugaboo envy.

BFF'S

Isn't it just amazing when things fall into place so perfectly sometimes? We never knew when (and at times it felt like "if") we would have a baby, and when we finally did, it was within 2 months of one of our closest friends having a baby too!

We're hoping Missy & Matt's son Jack will be Joseph's Best Friend Forever. We've already had a few playdates, but so far those have been more rewarding for the parents. They sure are cute together, especially with Jack sporting a fauxhawk.

A Few Faves

So.......How many pictures can 1 person take of 1 baby in 1 month?
Well, if you're Carl, that would be well over 200!
Here are just a few of our favorites so far.

Now the ABSOLUTE favorite photo you'll be seeing soon enough, when our birth announcement arrives in the mail, but this was the runner up:

Sleepytime

So I've heard this rumor that when you're a new parent, you're supposed to sleep when the baby sleeps. But if I was doing that, I'd miss the chance to take pictures like this!

He must be starting to sense that flash going off all the time....

Don't worry about us - we really do find the time to sleep when we need it.

JT at 1 month

We can't believe an entire month has gone by already (and we're JUST getting to start this blog). Daddy Carl and Papa Brent are doing a pretty good job so far. It's everything we imagined it would be - rewarding, fulfilling, and yes, exhausting.

We have to give a special nod to Heidi Houston (our cousin on Brent's side) for the brilliant idea of taking a picture of our little guy every month, so we can watch and document his growth.

Hopefully we'll have the time to post pictures from the last month, but at the very least, we hope to keep everyone up to date from here on out.

Introducing Joseph!

Our son, Joseph, was born on July 18, 2007, at 5:22pm. He weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 21 inches long. We got to pick him up at the adoption agency and bring him home on July 20, 2007.

This is our first family photo, taken at The Barker Foundation.

Joseph's first car ride, on his way home! We bought him an alligator while we were out shopping that morning as our special present to him, to let him know Louisiana will be a big part of his life. (We didn't see any stuffed crawfish anywhere!)

Papa drove us home safely and carried me inside.
